This, a project for Burning Man 2002nd The goal was to build solar path light for alternative energy Zone.
Anybody may ask: “Why * build * a solar path light when someone can go to a home supply store and buy one for under $ 10?”
The answer is to learn and create is fun! It’s so cool to fiddle with the little bitty electronic parts until suddenly there is light! Someone derived pleasure from seeing a home-made candles, in all its glory, funky, light trails in the AEZ. Plus to build a solar path lights are a great introduction to circuits and solar power!
This project was made possible through the collective efforts of several members of the AEZ mailing list. A special thanks goes to the stunningly talented AEZ members who built the Solar CDs, Jeff Barlow of AEZ, and Head Hardware Wonka, Mike Tarrant of Blinky red things in Hushville.
To right is one of those super cool Solar CDs. They play music of the sun for an amount of about 4.4 volts.

The flow of Electricity
The Two LED Circuit: Day and Night
During days when the sun is shining on the Solar Disc, photovoltaic power is flowing into the batteries, recharging them for their night’s work.
Anybody may ask, “What are LEDs from turning on during the day?”
answer is that the current provided by Solar CD seeks out any open path. Most of the current flows directly from the Solar Disc and into the batteries. But a small amount of current flowing through the 2.2k resistor R1, where it meets the greater resistance of 10k resistor R2. An even smaller amount of current flowing through R2, the rest of this stream flows into the “base” lead of transistor Q1, which “turn on” Q1, creating an open path for current through the 2.2k resistor R3 and then through the Q1 collector to the emitter. This prevents current flowing into the base of the transistor Q2. If the current flowing into the base of Q2 would light up on.
The width of red arrows attempt to indicate how much current is flowing in every place in the circuit. Note that all voltage and mA are approximate. The actual voltage and mA varies conditions.
Anybody asks: “What turns the lights at night?”
When the sun stops Solar CD produces electricity, and the batteries take over all work and start pumping their stored power in the circuit. The current run of one-way valve, diode D1 and can go further. So a small amount of current flowing over 2.2k resistor R3, and since there can flow over the transistor Q1 (which is off), the current flows into the base lead of transistor Q2: “switched on” this Q2. Now, this creates an open path to the most current can flow through the LEDs and Q2, which of course makes the LEDs light up!
Anybody says, “I have a vague idea about current and electricity. I know it has something to do with” bitty particles’ moving around, but still all seems like magic to me! ”
Jeff writes, “In fact, the” bitty particles are all electrons, and they all have the same charge. -1, It just feels like magic, because the part that moves is too small to see the traditional crutch beginners is to think of water flow in pipes, you can not see .. that either but you know it’s there because you can see the water when it comes out in the end. To say that you have a certain current in amps is just a shorthand for saying that some (very large) number of electrons have passed a certain point in one second. It’s the same idea to measure water flow in gallons per minute. Keep in mind that the various streams differ only quantitatively. It can be 10mA and another 50A (50 000 mA) but they are both only electrons passing a point, and electrons are in all cases. “
